studio guidelines

General etiquette

Please be considerate of other students' work on the shelves.

Make sure after every class and open studio that you clean the surface area you were working on including all tables, wheels, wedging area, and sinks. Any sanding of your pieces, greenware or bisque, MUST be done outside.

What should I wear?

Clothes you are comfortable with getting a little dirty! Shoes must be worn at all times. We also recommended bringing an apron, or you can grab one in our shop in person when you arrive.

Can I bring food or drinks?

Yes! Feel free to bring in outside food or drinks. We know most classes take place during dinner hours and don’t want you to go hungry :)

How often do you fire the kiln?

We fire around the clock and rotate through three large electric kilns. Turn-over rates are dependent on the volume of work moving through our kilns, which typically means the turn-over rate is slower toward the end of sessions.

If you are eager to get pieces back, consider pacing your glazing throughout the session so that it doesn’t get backed up with the end-of-session rush!

What is Open Studio?

Open Studio hours are non-instructional time for you to come work on your projects.

Open Studio will be $10 per reservation and for fairness we limit everyone to one reservation per release. If you are having trouble paying the Open Studio Fee, please email us at hello@broadstudiosclubhouse.com.

No refunds will be offered for open studio hours. If you cannot make it into your reserved Open Studio session, we suggest you try to find a classmate via slack who can take your spot so it doesn’t go to waste.

What if I miss a class or want a refund?

Make-up classes
We cannot offer make-up classes, however we do offer a complimentary open studio if you can’t make it to a class. 6 week classes get one complimentary open studio, and 12 week classes get two.

Refunds (6 week and 12 week)

Full refunds are available up to two weeks before the start date of your class. If you need to drop a class past the two week mark, reach out to us to see if we can fill your class spot. If your spot is filled by another student, we can issue a refund, but if the spot remains unfilled, no refund will be issued.

Due to the nature of our class structure, and the fact that we are a small business, we cannot make exceptions. Thank you for understanding.

Clay

We use mid-fire clay from Armadillo Clay:

  • Cinco Blanco
  • Cinco Rojo
  • Buffalo Wallow

We also stock Speckled Buff from Laguna Clay when available. Students are not allowed to use other clay. Members may use outside clay, but we require test tiles to test the compatibility between our glazes and your clay.

Glazes

The Club House provides all glazes. Outside glazes are only allowed if tested and approved by your instructor or studio manager.

If the bottom of your pot isn’t properly wiped or the glaze is too thick, it will go on the "Try Again" shelf. This means it needs fixing before we can fire it.

Underglazes

We provide a limited selection of underglaze and 8 colors of slip for surface decoration in our glaze lab.

Stoke & Coat is allowed, but since it's a glaze, it should not be used on or near the bottom of your pot.
