What’s the difference between wheel throwing, hand building and coil building?

Each of these techniques is a different way of shaping clay:

  • Wheel throwing: This involves using a pottery wheel to shape clay as it spins. The artist centers the clay and uses their hands and tools to pull and shape it into forms like bowls, cups, and vases. It’s great for making symmetrical pieces.

  • Hand building: A more freeform approach, hand building involves shaping clay using just your hands, fingers, and simple tools. This includes techniques like pinching (forming a pot by pinching clay between fingers) and slab building (rolling out flat sheets of clay and assembling them).

  • Coil building: A specific type of hand building where long snake-like coils of clay are stacked and smoothed together to create forms. This technique allows for more organic and sculptural shapes compared to wheel throwing.

Each method has its own charm and possibilities—hand and coil building allow for more experimental, textured, or irregular shapes, while wheel throwing is great for refined, functional ware!

What if I have zero experience with clay?

No experience is necessary!  Sign up for an “all-levels” class and our awesome instructors will help guide you through the creative process. Be ready to learn, get dirty and have fun!

How do I get into a class that is sold out?

Join the waitlist! You’ll find the waitlist for each sold out product on the bottom of the product’s page. Enter your email and you will be the first to know if someone drops out!

Where do I get tools & clay?

You can purchase a pottery tool kit and clay on our website or from Armadillo Clay. We use Cinco Rojo, Cinco Blanco and Buffalo Wallow clay in the studio. Please talk to your instructor before using outside clay and glazes.

What is Open Studio?

Open Studio is non-instructional studio time for you to work on your individual projects. These are posted for sign-up weekly and each student is able to sign up for one Open Studio opportunity per drop. Open studio is only available to current students.

Open Studios are NON REFUNDABLE and NON TRANSFERABLE to another date. Please use our Open Studio channel on slack to make any Open Studio swaps.

Since we cannot accommodate make-up classes in our schedule, Open Studio is the best option to make up for any missed classes! Check out your welcome email for a code for a free Open Studio in the case of a missed class.

What if my class gets canceled due to weather?

In the event of inclement weather, we will cancel class and will do our best to schedule a makeup class date.

What are the member hours?

How do I know if I’m ready for membership?

Members ideally have taken at least 18 weeks of classes and feel comfortable working with clay without guidance. Membership is great for those wanting to further their ceramic practice on their own schedule.

If I want to be a member, what do I need to do?

If you would like to become a member, please read over our Membership Guidelines and then fill out the interest form on our website.

If I apply, how long will it take to be onboarded as a member?
