ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:

Join The Austin Common and Broad Studios Club House for a fun civics + crafting event! Learn how Austin's local government works and how you can make your voice be heard at the local level... by voting in local elections! During this two-hour workshop, you'll have the opportunity to make your very own vote-themed clay pinch pot, all while learning about what you'll see on your ballot this year.

The Austin Common (@The_Austin_Common) is a local news site and civic education organization that uses art and social media to make learning about local government accessible and fun! Each election cycle, they create easy-to-understand voter guides for all the down-ballot races that tend to get the least amount of media attention, but have a really big impact on Austinites' everyday lives.

During this workshop you'll learn:

  • The basics of how local city government works

  • What you'll see on your local ballot this year - including the Austin mayoral election, several Austin City Council seats, as well as Travis County and AISD elections

  • How you can get more involved in your local community!

  • How to make a basic pinch pot catch-all and add surface design to it

Crafting lead by Hallie Shafer

Civics lesson lead by Amy Stansbury
